The History of Halloween
Preparing for a Magical Season
By Dorothea Delgado
As the world around us begins to change color, temperature and light; the sights, sound, and smells of October bring about changes in all of us. Our bodies metabolism begins to change, preparing us for shorter winter days. Our consciousness begins to shift from the more actively mental, to the more psychically receptive state, which is appropriate to the dark half of the year.
As all these changes occur, we prepare for the magical night of Halloween. The magic of old comes alive with witches flying across the sky, ghosts, goblins and fairies. Around Halloween when the spirit world is very close we are filled with the wonder and mystery of the other realms.
In the Celtic tradition Halloween is Samhain and marks the transition from the light half of the year to the dark. The earth mother has delivered her harvest–the fruits of the earth. At this time the abundance of fruits and vegetables begins to slow, and our ancient ancestors gathered and prepared for the winter. Now is the time that our focus shifts from the physical side of life to the spiritual, for at this time of transition the veil is very thin between the two worlds.
Samhain or Halloween represents the universal cycle of birth, death and rebirth. A celebration of the journey home to spirit, and is the most traditional time of communication with the spirit world. We can experience the unseen presence of departed friends and loved ones, as well as our beloved animals in spirit.
The Veil and My Personal Experience
For me personally, I myself feel more affected at this time of year. Dreams and visitations happen more frequently and there is a definite increase and intensification in experiences of physical presence. Messages communicated from the other side are felt more strongly.
The concept of the veil becoming thinner at the very end of October and beginning of November is age old and can be found in many different cultures. It may be that the energetic and electromagnetic grid of the earth begins to shift in order to accommodate the transmission of energy, which thins the veil and allows for increased spiritual presence in the earth atmosphere.
The Party Effect
It may be as simple as the concept of throw a party and people come. We tend to celebrate at this time of year in many ways and in many cultures and Spirit would be aware of that and show up at an increased level.
Costumes and masks have long been associated with the transition into spirit. One of the best known is the gold death mask of the Egyptian king Tutankhamen. Many of the North American Indian nations buried their dead with wooden masks, while in South and Central America, the ancients covered the faces of the deceased with masks of turquoise and jade.
Meditation Circles
Along with masking, costuming and communicating with the spirit worlds, Halloween is a traditional time for divination. Halloween is a perfect time for laying out your tarot cards or casting your runes.
A meditation or development circle is where a group of people get together and form a circle. You say a prayer asking that the circle be surround with white light; and ask for information to come through from the highest. Inviting loved ones, angels and guides to join you.
You can share messages and impressions you receive with others. Many times people use tarot, runes or Ouija boards while within the protective circle.
Have an Incredible All Hallows Eve
However you choose to spend your Halloween, whether it is donning a mask or handing out candy to little ghouls and goblins or having your own private meditation circle, we wish you a mystical, magical All Hallows Eve.
