According to a letter generally accepted to have been written by St. Patrick himself, at the age of sixteen he was captured from his home in Britain by a group of pirates. The raiders took him to Ireland where he was enslaved and held captive to work as a shepherd.
Patrick wrote that the time spent in captivity was critical to his spiritual development, that the Lord afforded him the opportunity to be forgiven of his sins and converted to Christianity. After six years, he escaped on a ship and returned home. He studied in Europe, became ordained as a missionary and returned to Ireland where he baptized thousands.
Legend credits St. Patrick with teaching the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity by using the shamrock to illustrate the concept of three persons in one God. March 17, popularly known as St. Patrick’s Day, is the anniversary of his death, as well as being celebrated as a cultural event with parades and festivals around the world.
