Lucio Romero does Grand Metal Sculptures
A Discovery of Unusual Gift
Cozette Cravens
On the way to Knight’s Ferry in Oakdale, Calif., something may catch your eye on Highway 108. It could be a huge metal dinosaur. Lucio Romero and his son make everything you see, and they make it out of metal.
There is a large variety of metal sculptures; from frogs, flowers, a cowboy on a horse (real life size), dinosaurs (of different kinds), bears, and camels, all the way to intricate gazebos and garden décor. There isn’t anything Romero can’t make from metal.
Many of his creations are in life-like forms and others are of a smaller scale. The photographs I have cannot do justice to the detail that is put into his work. You have to see it to really appreciate its beauty.
Romero’s father was a metal sculpture who taught him the craft at an early age; in turn Romero taught his son the craft. The three generations have kept this craft alive.
While working a full time job, Romero worked with the metal sculptures in his spare time; it was enjoyable and brought in extra income. He has since retired and decided to open his business named Romero Imports. He has been doing business for 14 years, doing what he enjoys and knows extremely well. He really likes custom work and he finds it challenging and creative. People send pictures and small 3-D figures and ask him to duplicate it in larger form, and he does it. His yard sculptures and garden décor are worth the trip to see them. I delighted in his studio and yard gallery.
