Hellboy II The Golden Army
Hellboy II:Golden Army
The Story Continues
Tom Cravens
In this continuation of the Hellboy saga, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) and Liz (Selma Blair) are fighting like an old married couple. When the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) is sent to investigate an incident at an auction house, they encounter an ancient horror. The Tooth Fairy was unleashed by Prince Nuada (Luke Goss).
As their battle progresses, the Bureau is compromised in a way that can not be covered up. Hellboy it seems, is uncontrollable and not discreet, which becomes a problem. A new team leader, Johann Krauss (James Dodd/John Alexander/ Voiced by Seth MacFarlane), is brought in to replace Tom Manning (Jeffrey Tambor).
In their search for Prince Nuada, Abe (Doug Jones) finds Princess Nuala (Anna Walton) and falls hard for her. Abe’s duet with Hellboy about love is not to be missed. They may not know what love is, but they have a male bonding moment familiar to many.
The Race Is On
Then, the race is on to prevent Prince Nuada from activating the Golden Army, which will destroy mankind.
At the Market, a new world is opened to Hellboy and Abe, because they are not strange here. They become part of the bustling crowd.
The new characters and digital creations are terrific, each one is brought to life by a great deal of care given to the little details.
The Tooth Fairy close up is a horrific killing machine that would be dangerous by itself, let alone in a swarm as shown at the auction house.
This film is not for children who have fond memories of the traditional Tooth Fairy.
A Rebellious Hero
Cozette Cravens
There is a rebellious hero, Hellboy (Ron Perlman) and his girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair) who has pyrokinetic powers, plus, a fish like creature, Abe (Doug Jones) who demonstrates his powers of empathy, and then Krauss. Who is a protoplasmic creature who lives in a specially designed suit.
Add the bad guy, Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) and his sidekick Fragglewump (Brian Steele), and Princess Nuala (Anna Walton), Prince Nuada’s twin sister. She becomes the love interest for Abe.
Summing it up: Good versus Evil, with a little comedy and romance. This is what this film offers.
What made this film enjoyable were the special effects, visual effects, and the incredible makeup, which brought these characters to life. Even though my husband enjoyed the movie, I personally would not buy it for my film library.
