Success will bless whate’er you do.” Turquoise, the opaque cousin to lapis lazuli, is one of the oldest gemstones known. Its robin’s egg color has been highly valued and worn by Egyptian Pharaohs and Aztec Kings. It was first sent to Europe through Turkey, hence its name, which means “Turkish” in French. Since about 200 B.C., both southwestern U.S. Native Americans and many Indian tribes in Mexico used Turquoise extensively. Turquoise comes in sky-blue (the most popular color), blue-green and apple-green (rare). Blue Turquoise represents balance between the clear sky and the ocean depths. In folklore, it is believed to promote happiness and long life. North American Indians believed Turquoise promotes clarity, enhances wisdom, peace, honesty, kindness, and spirituality. Shamans considered it a healing and communication gemstone. It is the symbol of friendship, and is often given to brides on their wedding day for ‘Something Blue’. Turquoise is the December birthstone and the 6th and 11th anniversary gem. Due to the natural state of the stones, each may differ slightly in color, size and inclusions.
