Gemstones, Nature’s Touchstones

Aside from their beauty, folklore says they offer us many other benefits. Here are a few of the myriad of gemstones we wear:

Turquoise: The opaque cousin to Lapis Lazuli, is one of the oldest gemstones known. Its color has been highly valued and worn by Egyptian Pharaohs and Aztec Kings. It was first sent to Europe through Turkey, hence its name, which means “Turkish” in French. Since about 200 B.C., both southwestern U.S. Native Americans and many Indian tribes in Mexico used Turquoise extensively.

North American Indians believed Turquoise promotes clarity, enhances wisdom, peace, honesty, kindness, and spirituality. It is often given to brides on their wedding day for ‘Something Blue’. Turquoise is the December birthstone and the 6th and 11th anniversary gem.

Honey Jade: Spiritual healers believe Jade imparts serenity, assists the wearer in expressing love and reaching full potential. Jade is considered as a stone which enhances health and wealth. Jade symbolizes wisdom, compassion, peace, courage, justice, mercy, emotional balance, stamina, fidelity, humility, generosity, longevity, fertility, and moderation.

Onyx: The velvety black of Onyx makes an unmistakable statement of power and sophistication. Carved in the image of Mars, the God of War, Onyx was reputed to give courage to Roman soldiers. Onyx can stand alone for a bold and richly self-assured look.

Spiritual healers believe Onyx imparts strength, self-confidence, encourages happiness and good fortune. Onyx symbolizes mastery, self-control, vigor, and the ability to let go of bad relationships or things that harm you. Since ancient times, Onyx has been used as protection against negativity. Onyx gemstone is the birthstone for the month of February, while it is the mystical stone for December and a lucky charm for people under the Leo and Gemini zodiac sign. Onyx is the 7th and 10th wedding anniversary gemstone.

Tiger’s Eye: Gets its name from the flash of color that resembles the flash in a tiger’s eye at night. Tiger Eye is Chatoyant Quartz with croicidolite (blue asbestos) which causes the cat’s eye effect known as chatoyancy. Each stone displays different colors and has a silky texture.

It is the gemstone of Capricorn and Leo because it balances the male and female energies. Shaman believe it to be a power stone; it has a wonderful reputation for attracting wealth, money and luck. However it has some powerful spiritual uses as well. It enhances courage, brings passion and physical strength, and allows these attributes to be tempered with mental clarity and a joyful outlook.
