New Year’s Resolution, Five Steps for SuccessChris Vincent
A New Year’s Resolution is a way for a person to break off their existing bad habits and start afresh with new goals and a newfound commitment. The truth is a person can decide to change any day of the year, but the New Year is symbolic and more motivating in the sense of a feeling of invigoration and a knowing that he or she can change. After all, a new year could mean a new you.
So how do you maximize your chances to succeed? Answer, by writing the right resolution.
Five Steps to Writing the Correct Resolution
1. Write Down things that are Important to You, and Not to Others.
It is important that a person sets goals that motivate him or her. Change requires commitment and if you are driven by your goals, then you have a much higher chance to succeed.
For example, if he wants to devote more time to his family, then this is what he must focus on. It is pointless to try to do it like his friend who serves food to the homeless every Friday. Helping strangers is charitable and so is looking properly after one's family. By concentrating on improving his relationship with his family, he will be very motivated and he has a bigger chance of doing it consistently for the whole year and beyond.
Another example involves her personal success. If she wants to get a promotion at her job, then she must go for it, instead of trying to copy her friend who may be a successful businesswoman. For example, this well-intentioned friend may have been encouraging her, as well as putting pressure on her to launch her own business.
2. Be Positive with Your New Year's Resolution.
It is important to also write about what you desire and choose to do, not about what you don't want to do. For example, on losing weight, acknowledge you want to lose 15 pounds. You must set what the final desired weight is to be; e.g. 120 pounds, giving something to aim for.
Another example is if somebody wants to stop drinking. Then you must also highlight what is to replace that old habit with e.g. exercising or reading or drinking water.
3. Focus about Realistic Goals in the Resolution.
It is important that a person writes down challenging, but attainable targets in the resolution. If an employee and wants more money, then write a realistic goal for the year.
Example: $5,000 to $ 15,000 extra income for the year is achievable. It is pointless for him to aim for an extra $1 million dollar in a single year when if there is no realistic chance of attaining this goal. It will be discouraged by such a big goal and in the end; this will prevent any action being taken.
4. Focus on a Series of Small Achievable Goals, in Addition to a Large One.
Writing down that a person wants to spend more time with his family in his New Year’s Resolution is good. This gives him direction. Moreover, he should write down how he intends to do that.
For instance, he can write that he is going to play and talk with each of his child for 5-10 minutes every evening and spend 15 minutes genuinely listening to what his wife has to say. He can also plan to take his family on half a day out each weekend by going to the movies, by going to a restaurant, to the public park or on a picnic on the beach. By being specific in his resolution (without being overwhelming) about how he intends to achieve his goal, he has higher chance of actually attaining it.
5. Focus on Only One Goal in the New Year’s Resolution.
This is probably the most important aspect to fulfill a resolution. People have a tendency to write about 10-20 things that they would like to accomplish during the year and in the end, they fail to achieve any of them. This is because it is much harder to do ten things than it is to do one thing. In the end, by chasing five to ten birds, they end up with nothing. Good intention, but not good enough.
The solution? Focus on the one thing that is most important. When a person has attained the most important goal, then they can focus on the next most important thing. After a while, this builds a chain of success.
For example, if a person wants to lose weight and gain muscles, first write down what is most important in the New Year’s resolution. For most people, losing weight to become slimmer is the priority. So, focus on shedding those unwanted pounds and tighten up. Then after this achievement one can focus on building their body to gain muscle mass.
Write down the one most important thing in the resolution and do it right, and a person will always succeed.
