A New Day
Ancient cliffs embrace the frozen river
like massive totems keeping watch.
Trees tenaciously cling to the rock
supported by their spindly roots .
A distinct silence — occasionally interrupted
by the cracking of ice or the call of a hawk.
The sun has not made its way o’er the cliffs,
yet it brings a gentle light to the land.
A new day has begun.
