Garnet

The name Garnet comes from the Latin word for pomegranate—its crystals resemble the fruit’s color and garnet-colored seeds. However, garnets actually come in a much wider array of color variations: reds, red-pinks, oranges, greens, yellow-browns and some that change color throughout the stone. Garnet is one of the few untreated gems and is a durable stone, as evidenced by a necklace made of garnets found on a young man in a grave dating back to 3000 BC.

According to legend, Noah used a glowing garnet within a lantern to help him steer his ark through the dark night. In healing, garnets have been associated with blood related issues, such as remedies for hemorrhages. Popular in jewelry, its rosy glow is flattering against the skin. Garnets are January’s birthstones and the zodiac sign for Aquarius; they are also given on the 2nd and 6th wedding anniversaries. Due to the natural state of the stones, each may differ slightly in color, size and inclusions.
